HOW TO INSTALL MPLAYER IN REDHAT/CENTOS
Introduction
In this session we are going to learn how to install mplayer in Redhat/CentOS. mplayer is also referred as Movie Player developed by Mplayer Team on year 2000 and released under GNU GPLv2 License. It supports movie file formats like AVI, WMV, WMA, MPEG…etc. mplayer is written using c programming language and available in different languages. Follow the below Steps to install mplayer in Redhat/Centos :
mplayer doesn’t not comes under default repository of Redhat and CentOS. so we have to install it through 3rd party repositories. EPEL (Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux) is a repository invented by Fedora can be used to install additional packages which is not comes under default redhat and centos repositories.
So refer the below command install epel-release repository.
[root@localhost ~]# yum -y install epel-release # Install epel-release repository

After install the epel-release package we need to install another addon repository i.e. nux-dextop. nux-desktop is a package repository which is particularly made for multimedia packages like vlc media player, mplayer, shutter snapshot tool…etc. So to install the same follow the below command.
[root@localhost ~]# rpm -Uvh http://li.nux.ro/download/nux/dextop/el6/x86_64/nux-dextop-release-0-2.el6.nux.noarch.rpm Retrieving http://li.nux.ro/download/nux/dextop/el6/x86_64/nux-dextop-release-0-2.el6.nux.noarch.rpm warning: /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.kNbvqx: Header V4 RSA/SHA1 Signature, key ID 85c6cd8a: NOKEY Preparing... ########################################### [100%] 1:nux-dextop-release ########################################### [100%]
After installing all required prerequisite packages and repositories for mplayer we can check the information of mplayer using yum command. refer the sample output below.
[root@localhost ~]# yum info mplayer # Check Information of mplayer

Install the mplayer using yum command.
[root@localhost ~]# yum -y install mplayer # Install the mplayer package
You can confirm the installed mplayer packages using rpm -qa command.
[root@localhost ~]# rpm -qa | grep mplayer # Confirm the installed mplayer Package
mplayer-1.1-33.20150505svn.el6.nux.x86_64
mplayer-common-1.1-33.20150505svn.el6.nux.x86_64
After install mplayer package you will found an hidden directory named “.mplayer” in home directory in which we have a configuration file called “config“.
We have to edit that file and enter lirc=no. Refer the sample output below.

Now we are done with Installation and Configuration part. It’s time to open the mplayer with a media file (Video File). Here I have a video file named “movie.mp4“. So to open the video file refer the below command.
Syntax : mplayer [path to video file]
[root@localhost ~]# mplayer /home/elinuxbook/Desktop/movie.mp4 # Open mplayer
